NZ Links
Below are links that relate to New Zealand in general. Links that relate to Dunedin can be found on our About Dunedin page.

This page is broken up into two areas, the first is travel information ( heading north and heading south, plus other information), it relates to information that is 'close' to Dunedin and that we find worth looking at (including travel times, great places to stop and check out and anything else that we find interesting) . The Second is general information about New Zealand (it has recommended Bed and breakfasts, links to art sites and gardens and anything else that we find might be of interest.)

Travel Times and Distances
This link will give you travel times to almost any of the major cities/towns in New Zealand. I've made a summary of these below that relate to Dunedin only.

Heading North
Below are the activities that we find most enjoyable when heading north out of Dunedin.

Dot Coastal Road (just out of Dunedin)- If you enjoy a nice coastal road then there are a couple of additions to your trip north that might be of interest. The previous owners (Karen and Paul) travelled this coast road one day and because it was a business trip (i.e. they went for dinner at Moeraki, one has to check out the food, it's part of the job) and while they where doing this they took travel times. Of course you need to add in stop times but as far as travel goes it only adds in another 50 minutes to your trip north (and can actually be a really nice half day trip, travel out in the afternoon, have tea at Fleurs Place, drive home via SH1)

Travel Times North Via Coast Road
City Sanctuary B&B to Port Chalmers 20 Minutes
Port Chalmers to Blueskin bay turn off
(you will need to take the road to Long Beach which is just before Port Chalmers shopping area on the right, actually the Blueskin bay road but signing is not great. See this map for details of the turn off. )
20 Minutes
Blueskin bay turn off to Waitati 10 minutes
Waitati to Warrington Turn off 5 minutes
Warrington Turn off to Karitane (via coast road) 15 minutes
Karitane to State highway one turn off 5 minutes
State highway one turn off to Karitane to Moeraki 25 minutes
Total Time 1 hour 40 minutes

Travel Times North Via State Highway One (SH1)
Dunedin City to Waitati 10 minutes
Waitati to Warrington Turn off 3 minutes
Warrington Turn off to Karitane one turn off 10 minutes
Karitane highway one turn off to Moeraki 25 minutes
Total Time 50 minutes

Dot Moeraki and Moeraki Boulders (1 hour north of Dunedin)- A little fishing village on the coast south of Oamaru (15 minutes south from Oamaru or 1 hour north of Dunedin) has become famous for a geological wonder on its windswept sands. The Moeraki Boulders are huge spherical stones that are scattered over the sandy beaches. You can find much more information at this link: Moeraki Boulders. Of course its important that the tide is out as you can reach the rocks a lot easier but they are still really interesting even when the tide is in. The moeraki boulders are half way along the beach and at the south end of the beach is the township (turn off where the boat is, it has a sign :) ).

Dot Fleurs Place (1 hour north of Dunedin)- This is situated in the Moeraki township and has wonderful food. We highly recommend it and if it's a nice day you can sit upstairs on the deck and look over the fishing port, beach and sea. Opens at 9am in winter and early in summer and goes untill midnight. Full details can be found at their web site : Fleurs Place

Dot Oamaru (1 hour 15 minutes north of Dunedin)- We really enjoy the historic part of town that is being upgraded into a shopping/art area. You can find this at the south end of the main street. More details to come :) . Of course there are many other things to see and do, this web site is pretty good : Visit Oamaru

Dot Seals just Past Kaikoura - A few minutes north of Kaikoura there is a sign that says watch for seals. Not only is this a wonderful piece of coastline but you can now stop and get some great views of seals on the rocks just below the main highway.

Dot Kaikoura - Well known for whale watching. Here is a web site that looks, pretty extensive Kaikoura

Heading South
When heading south we find that most people are either going to the catlins or to Te Anau. These are the things that we recommend:

Dot Southern Scenic Route The Southern Scenic Route actually goes through the catlins to invercargill and then continues on to Te Anau. You don't have to do all the way via this route as it does take a few extra hours drive time.
We have flyers that list all the great stops along the way and a book showing some of the views and background. If you have time its a great place to explore.

Dot Eastern Southland Gallery This little gallery is great. Amazing to find such high quality art in the deep south. Eastern Southland Gallery

Dot Mandeville Airfield If you are into restored old planes then this is the place to go. Unfortunately it seems to be closed everything we pass, but it does offer flights and I've heard they have good coffee. Check it out, I know that we will be :)

General Information

Our Favourite New Zealand Bed and Breakfasts
Dot Tikapa Moana lodge. Nestled between the beautiful Coromandel and Hunua Ranges, Tikapa Moana Lodge is located on the Seabird Coast of New Zealand's vital Firth of Thames ecosystem. Situated just 75 kms south of Auckland, Bill and Marilyn's place is a wonderful spot to chill out at instead of being in Auckland its self.

Dot The Boot, we have not stayed here but have been to the cafe (which has wonderful food) and The Boot looked great from the outside :)
